Whip's Cottage Restoration Update

The Whip's Cottage Renovation

The Whip’s Cottage is the oldest dwelling on the Radnor campus. The 1883 Foundation is raising funds to renovate the historic building so that it is properly preserved and available for use once again.
The Whip’s Cottage was built in 1742 by the Hibberd family. Between 1796-1799, Benjamin’s son built the stone addition onto the east side of the brick dwelling. Part of the earlier brick home still survives as an exposed corner of the south wall of glazed brick laid in the Flemish bond style, a common brick pattern in colonial Pennsylvania structures. The bricks from the original 1742 building were re-used for the large, three-story farmhouse that the Hibberd family built in 1857, which now serves as the clubhouse for Radnor Hunt. In 1930, Radnor Hunt purchased the property and built the stable, kennels and huntsman’s cottage. The whipper-in is the person who assists the huntsman in managing the hounds during fox hunts. When completed, the restoration will ensure that this historic treasure at Radnor Hunt is preserved and available for future generations.
